Study Reveals Similar Morality for Conservative and Liberals

In certain environments, conservatives often find themselves alone, dealing with a kind of alienation due to their political belief system. An academic Study that was co-authored by the Universities of Southern California and Virginia indicated that, while many conservatives understand the general liberal mindset, the same does not hold true for liberals when it comes to conservatism.

1. Ideology. Conservatives often face the fact that liberals do not seem to want to know what is behind their ideology. Thus, perceived notions, taken from media sound bites, are the order of the day. Often, gross stereotypes are portrayed of conservatives including homophobia, xenophobia, racism and judgmental bigotry. It is assumed that all conservatives wish is to ensure that the wealthy become more rich and that the poor and sick should die as quickly as possible.

2. Liberal bigotry. The frustrations that conservatives face regularly due to their political beliefs is in itself, a form of bigotry that is based upon ignorance. For example, in some instances, the participants in the UVA Study of over 2,000 Americans, were instructed to fill out their surveys as though they were a “typical” conservative or liberal.

The results of the UVA Study indicated that conservatives and moderates were equally adept at surmising how liberals would respond to the questions. However, liberals, particularly those describing themselves as “very liberal,” were not nearly as able to conceptually understand how their perceived adversaries would answer the same questions.

3. Liberal morality. The study explained its findings by concluding that liberals form their distinct bases of morality upon the following values:

*Caring for the weak
*Fairness
*Liberty

4. Conservative morality. It was apparent from the Study that what many liberals do not seem to realize is that conservatives have a much more complex and broad system of morality. First, conservatives do care about the same issues as liberals. They just believe in a different way of approaching those issues, as well as liberty and fairness. For example, into the conception of morality, conservatives will factor in:

*Loyalty
*Respect for authority
*Sanctity

It is those added dimensional aspects that seem to perplex liberals, particularly the far left.

5. Dueling perceptions. The study further indicated that liberals often see conservatives as being in direct opposition to their core value system of fairness and compassion. In addition, conservatives are thought to be motivated by fighting against an ideology of an amoral value system. Not surprisingly, many liberals also believe that they are perceived to carry disrespect for tradition and authority and are against spiritual purity, when that is not the case.

6. Misconceptions. For instance, when conservatives have expressed moral issues concerning gay marriage, liberals seem to have difficulty understanding the perception that there is moral value in traditional arrangements. This produces a conclusion that conservatives are simply motivated by homophobia, without considering equality, fairness and rights. Consequently, the entire issue of how gay marriage can affect traditional family structures and gender roles becomes subverted.

The study concluded that in actuality, conservative and liberal moral values are far less polarized than the average person may believe. Therefore, more effective methods of reducing animosity and distrust between these ideological divisions should be explored and implemented.

the study is wrong. Conservatives are immoral to the bone. They will cut WIC and food stamps that help the poor in order to give the rich a bigger tax break. Look at paul ryan (aka Eddie Munster)budget for proof. These selfish conservatives worship atheistic ayn rand and claim they are Christians. What low life’s conservatives are.

    • Mal R

I’m going to start stalking you across all these websites. I mean, someone has to refute your stupidity.

It’s not that we wanna ‘give the rich a bigger tax break’. The rich pay the LIONS share of taxes and right thinking conservatives believe laws should apply to all of us equally ala, we should ALLLLLLL be paying the same tax rate. I’ll give you one very small victory in this area Gary. In this regard, I dont give a shizzle how poor you are. If a rich person is FORCED by the govt to do something 50% of the country isn’t then their Constitutional rights are being violated. Why dont you lefties believe in the Constitution? You’re constantly saying that we’re the ones destroying the constitution Gary.

“Look at paul ryan (aka Eddie Munster)budget for proof. These selfish conservatives worship atheistic ayn rand and claim they are Christians. What low life’s conservatives are.”

That’s really great and all that, but are you telling me Ayn Rand is the only conservative thinker out there? What happened to Ludwig Von Mises and Friedrich Von Hayek? I know that you certainly cant point me to the conservatives that worship Ayn Rand so it must be something else. A lie perhaps?

And on the topic of budgets, why hasn’t the left in the Senate produced a budget in YEARS? Why dont you lefties believe in the Constitution? BTW moron, Paul Ryan doesn’t control the House.

Low life’s huh? I’ll put the record of my low life against YOUR Occupy Wall Street record any of the week and twice today you bozo. Something tells me that aint gonna happen tho. Democrats have a SERIOUS aversion to scrutiny.

      • Colin Lindsly

The reason that there hasn’t been a budget bill in years is that the Republicans are masters at manipulating the Senate rules to their benefit. In the last few years, there have been a record number of filibusters. As for the House, Rep. Boehner is Chief Speaker.

As for the claim that 50% of Americans don’t pay taxes, this is partially true. While it is true that they don’t federal income taxes – they don’t meet the criteria, they do pay local and state taxes. They pay taxes when they buy goods.

I will never state that I understand conservatives. I feel alienated by their thinking and actions. I feel that many of them operate in a reality that lies outside mine, and, while I do respect that they believe they are acting in good faith when they are attempting to reform the government, I feel that their efforts are harmful to a large number of people.

“Democrats have a SERIOUS aversion to scrutiny…”

Let’s be fair and not broad brush. It isn’t Democrats that have a serious aversion to scrutiny. It’s particular morons subscribing to a pattern that they can comfortably parrot.

We can recognize these retards by the vehement arguments made that bear little correlation to fact or mental computational power. They protect the ‘Us vs Them’ meme without standards of truth or decency. Only pure willful ignorance and malice. An animosity directed at those with perceived superior assets.

I refer to it as the “Puckered Pecker” syndrome.

Gary’s comment is a general example of the “liberal” mindset. He seems to share traits with many of my friends. Regardless of intellect (although when it comes to intellect, I’m not sure Gary is an exemplary specimen – or like other “liberals,” his vitriol for conservatives overwhelms his capacity for rational thought), many seem to be linear thinkers who don’t even try to comprehend the simple relationships between cause and effect.

“They will cut WIC and food stamps that help the poor in order to give the rich a bigger tax break.”

That’s a typical statement and an untrue premise.

Reagan, facing a terrible economy when he took office, slashed taxes and not so amazingly, tax revenue increased. More capital in the private sector = more tax revenue for the government and more money for charity. Gary might not have liked the way the government spent that money, but it did increase the gov’s spending capacity (not that capacity has ever stopped government from spending – which could prove to be catastrophic in the near future). The overall wealth in society grew naturally and benefitted nearly everyone – some more than others – including the government. Employment increased and many poor were able to move from poverty into the middle class, pay taxes and decrease their dependency on government. I was one of those. Prior, I was so poor, all I could afford to eat was a potato one day and an egg the next. I was able to move out of poverty and my opportunities continued to improve.

If we use Gary’s method of continually increasing taxes on the rich instead of liberating private capital to flow into the economy, taken to its logical conclusion, wealth would disappear (both through attrition and business flight, as is happening now). People would be unable to move from poverty to the middle or upper classes (eventually, there wouldn’t be a middle class) and government revenue would shrink until it could no longer provide for a growing population of poor. I can’t recall a prosperous country when the means of production was directed by a totalitarian government that depended on labor for its survival. In extreme cases, it led to mass starvation and death. Of course conservatives want to help the disadvantaged and the best way to do that is to create economic opportunities that move as many as possible out of poverty.

It’s clear that the author of the study does not conceptually understand liberals and conservatives. Let’s take a look at how the modern liberal thinks versus the modern conservative.

    Liberal:

    1. All outcome for an individual or nation can be no better or worse than any other.
    2. If an outcome is found to be better, then they must have cheated.
    3. If an outcome is found to be worse, then they must have been victimized.
    4. The amount a victim lashes out is directly proportional to the victimization.
    5. It is the cheater that is doing the victimizing.

    Conservative:

    1. Good behavior leads to a better outcome.
    2. Bad behavior leads to a worse outcome.

A liberal flips good and bad. What a conservative considers good, the liberal considers bad.

Do you remember what the Bible says about those who call good, bad, and those who call bad, good? God has a little present waiting for them.
